Stories from a Devon churchyard
St. Mary's church, West Worlington
Wandering around a churchyard, reading gravestones and wondering about the stories of those buried there is a fascinating pre-occupation for a family historian.
In 1957 a numbered plan was made of the gravestones of West Worlington Churchyard, accompanied by a key of names of those buried in each plot. But over the years, the drawing has faded to be all but indecipherable.
Thanks to the skill of my husband, Brian Percival, the simple layout plan has now been replaced by a beautiful watercolour aerial perspective, along with a new list of names, which has been framed and hung in the church for visitors searching for their ancestors’ burial sites.
My One-Place Study is to research the individuals buried here and share what I discover.
